Provide students receiving special education services appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to promote intellectual, academic, emotional, behavioral, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills needed to function successfully in their community, with an emphasis on teaching vocational, independent living, and appropriate communication skills.
Education/Certification:
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required Special Education Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individualized
Education Program (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Ability to utilize research-based strategies related to independence and/or vocational skills and
transition services
Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to provide effective instruction in both classroom and community-based settings
Knowledge of special needs of students as well as strategies for teaching vocational skills
Ability to instruct students within community work sites with significant learning, social-emotional or behavioral needs
Experience:
Minimum of two years of special education teaching experience at the secondary level is preferred
Transition Related Responsibilities:
Conduct assessments with students and parents related to transition services to ensure student
strengths, preferences, and interests are addressed.
Develop transition services for student's annual IEP.
Develop and implement reasonable workplace accommodations for student interns that can be transferred to paid employment.
Provide information to students and parents regarding education, training, agency support, and community resources.
Act as liaison with outside agencies to help link student to possible services.
Develop paid and unpaid training sites in the community for Community Based Vocational Instruction.
Assist program in being compliant with TEA State Performance Plan Indicator 13.
Instructional Strategies:
Develop and implement lesson plans, IEP goals, and data collection methods that fulfill the requirements of District's vocational curriculum programs and show written evidence of preparation as required.
Develop and implement community based lesson plans that reflect a combination of direct instruction, small group, and independent learning based on the needs of each student.
Instruct students on skills addressed in IEP goals.
Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
Utilize instructional materials provided for teaching pre-requisite skills.
Provide a highly structured day in which students are consistently engaged.
Develop and implement an adult daily schedule that reflects the needs and goals of each intern for post-secondary life.
Student Growth and Development:
Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through the analysis of data and ongoing classroom and community evaluations.
Provide information to parents regarding transition, including available adult agency sources and adult opportunities.
Assume responsibility for providing information on extracurricular activities (Special Olympics, Miracle League, parent trainings) to parents.
Provide assistance to student interns to promote independence in self-care, medical, and personal hygiene as related to workplace appropriateness when needed.
Classroom/Job Site Management and Organization:
Create learning environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, emotional and behavioral development of students.
Manage student behavior in classroom and community settings -in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Provide necessary training to ensure paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom work effectively with students.
Ability to effectively work with minimal oversight and supervision.
Communication:
Establish and maintain open communication with parents, student, principals, teachers, employers, and cooperating businesses.
Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Professional Growth and Development:
Participate in professional development activities to improve independence/job-related skills.
Keep informed of and comply with state, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
Keep informed of State Performance Plan indicators related to transition planning.
Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other required documents.
Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Complete Region 10 Work-Based Learning Training.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise assigned teacher aide(s).

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
Maintain emotional control under stress. Physical demands include: frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting and transferring students to and from wheelchairs, and assisting with positioning students with physical disabilities. Exposure to biological hazards.
