Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive programs and activities, coordinated with other school- and community-based services and programs to foster an emotionally, physically, and socially safe learning environment that supports academic achievement.
Education/Certification:
Master’s degree in Guidance/Counseling or other licensed mental health professional
School Counselor certification preferred
Licensed Professional Counseling (LPC) certificate, LPC – Intern, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of evidence-based programs that support student well-being and mental health
Knowledge of the principles of effectiveness for establishing programs to prevent or reduce substance use and abuse, school violence, and bullying
Working knowledge of the Texas Safe and Supportive Schools Program
Develop and implement programs and strategies to create and sustain a safe and supportive school environment
Create, gather, and interpret data used to address staff and student safety and wellness
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of current Texas school safety requirements, including behavioral threat assessment and safe and supportive school program expectations
Knowledge and implementation of Sentinel or other state-approved behavioral threat assessment and case management systems
Ability to train campus staff and leadership teams on Sentinel documentation, threat assessment procedures, suicide risk protocols, and district safety expectations
Understanding of Texas Education Agency (TEA) guidance related to school safety compliance, Safe and Supportive School Program requirements, and multidisciplinary threat assessment teams
Ability to analyze and monitor district and campus safety data to support compliance, intervention planning, and continuous improvement
Experience:
Three years of experience in Counseling or Behavioral Health
Three years of experience in School Counseling or Administration preferred
Early Mental Health Intervention Programs:
Develop campus leaders’ program for the development of comprehensive policies and curriculum for emotionally and socially safe campuses.
Coordinate and consult with student support coordinators, campus counselors, and administrators to implement and evaluate the District’s Whole Child and prevention programming, ensuring consistent delivery of evidence-based initiatives (e.g., student wellness, early mental health intervention, suicide prevention, bullying prevention, dating violence, substance abuse awareness) and alignment with district standards.
Assist in coordinating the development and delivery of annual districtwide training on crisis response, bullying, outcry protocols, threat assessment procedures, suicide prevention, and state-required safety practices.
Support district implementation and monitoring of Sentinel threat assessment and case management procedures in alignment with Texas requirements.
Assist campuses with documentation, compliance, follow-up, and intervention planning related to behavioral threat assessments and suicide risk assessments.
Counseling/Consultation:
Consult and advise student support coordinators, Whole Child Site Coordinators, campus counselors, and principals as requested regarding student and/or family issues related to substance abuse, suicide threats, domestic violence, CPS, bullying, etc.
Assist in the development of District protocols, incorporating interventions, and follow-up to be used at the District/campus level for students in the following situations:
Substance abuse present or suspected
Student placement and return from the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) or the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP)
Students returning from residential, mental health, and/or substance abuse treatment
Relationship and/or domestic violence
Child Protective Services (CPS)
Bullying
Suicide and threat assessments
Collaborate with campus administrators, counselors, and multidisciplinary teams regarding threat assessment procedures, safety planning, re-entry planning, and student monitoring supports.
Provide consultation and guidance regarding state-required documentation and intervention procedures connected to student safety concerns.
Community and Campus Outreach:
Facilitate the implementation of services and curriculum for prevention programs and psycho-social education.
Coordinate and deliver training and awareness programs for staff, parents, and community members on student well-being and mental health topics.
Collaborate with the Guidance and Counseling team to update the referral and community resources list for the District, including specific point-of-contact information for various community agencies, including resources for free or reduced counseling for students and families.
Establish and maintain relationships with local community mental health agencies, law enforcement, etc., including participation in community coalitions and initiatives.
Other Responsibilities:
Attend professional growth activities to keep abreast of innovations in information regarding guidance and counseling services.
Prepare and maintain the District guidance and counseling resource web page with information regarding the Whole Child program and education and referral information for staff, students, and parents.
Assist the Managing Director of Guidance and Counseling with addressing staff and student health and wellness.
Oversee training and ongoing support for the Whole Child program on each campus.
Maintain current knowledge of Texas legislation, TEA guidance, and best practices related to school safety, student wellness, threat assessment, and prevention programming.
Assist with district reporting, monitoring, and compliance related to Sentinel and other state-required school safety initiatives.
